January 12, 1975 Dear Leon & Elizabeth-- Will try a note on these nice cheap things. Why don't you try these from the U.S.A.? Especially nice when you don't have anything to say. Dr. Teer from A&M has been here for the last 2 days. You can tell he is a regular SRI visitor; he flew in from Nairobi with about 20 lbs of fresh vegetables -- even lettuce! He said he would have bought meat but he didn't have anyplace to store it in his hotel overnight. Now _that_ is a bread and butter gift, par exellence, around here. We managed to survive the Scientific Council meeting without too much damage -- Joe's depressed about his project (may not be able to collect his birds to analyze stomach contents) so he's mumbling about the Kalahari Desert and/or Welder Wildlife Foundation, but I expect that will pass. Besides, I _know_ I'm not leaving once our possessions are here! Have decided whenever people are together, things go haywire. SRI is in midst of administrative crisis: the deputy-director has been fired (a good move) but for an officially stupid reason. It has been cussed and discussed for a constant week now - - hope things die down quickly. The Folses have adopted the official position that it is none of our business and we are lucky enough to be non-influential so that no one has tried to get us embroiled in it. It all sounds like Bryan High to me. Much love, Jan, Joe & Stephanie
