How about this? Hand "writ" by Joe, himself! Hope you are doing O.K. Leon & Elizabeth -- 5 Feb 75 Dear Dad & Elizabeth It was good to talk with you. You sounded as if you were in the next room. The financial officer in Arusha has had my bill of lading for several months and was supposed to contract a carrier to pick up our box about a month ago. I haven't found out whether or not he has. If not, then we will drive to Tanga very soon and try to get it. I'm still awaiting permission to collect birds within the park. There's something of a conflict between the Director of SRI and the director of National Parks, but I think things will work out, particularly since SRI wants to build and maintain a study collection of bird skins. Other than that, everything looks very good. As soon as we return (After Tanga) will start our camping-data collection expeditions once a month for a week to ten days. The price of telephone calls runs about $9 per 3 minutes (57 shillings @~7 to 1 plus 4 shilling chg.). which is a bargain as far as I can tell. We drive right by the telecommunications satellite tracking station in the rift valley, which is probably why we get such good connections. We met (Wild ass) Patty (of National Geographic fame) in Nairobi this trip and she introduced us to a couple working for the UN FAO. We got an excellent meal (including eland) and a very pleasant evening with the Casebeers (I didn't ask how they came up with that name!). At any rate we now know someone in Nairobi. After being run ragged shopping for several families we're ready for the peace & quiet of the Serengeti. Love, Joe, Jan & Steph
