July 1, 1975 Dear Mother & Daddy -- Thank you both for your recent letters. We have become synchronized in our letter-writing. About every Monday I get letter from both you and the Folses -- guess because I usually wrote both of you on the same day -- or at least mail them together. Yesterday we took our turn on the vegetable delivery: down south to Ndutu lodge (60 miles?) to pick them up and then back home to sort them, and see that people pick them up. The best thing that can be said about it is that it need happen to us only once every 6 months. We are getting an enormous assortment of food; last night we had a 9-vegetable salad. We are now [in] the possession of two comfortable porch chairs. All you have to do is remember to take the cushions in at night or the hyenas are likely to take them off and chew on them whenever they get bored. I'm afraid our garden has about had it. A hyrax (or Pembe in Swahili) crawled in and ate the cabbages and most of the tomato plants, so all that are left are my 7 pole bean plants (they weren't up when the pembe was there). Now we are looking around for smaller mesh chicken wire before starting over. Very much love, Jan, Joe, & Stephanie
