The Royal Mile is the oldest street in Edinburgh. It goes from the Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. This is a shot from just outside the Castle. The steeple in the next-to-last shot on the Castle page belings to the church that forms the wall to the right.
Picture showing the mixture of old and new in the center of Edinburgh - modern glassed-in building right up against a Renaissance townhouse.
This is an alleyway, or 'close,' one of many that radiate out from the Royal Mile. This one is open-air, but a number of them are roofed over.
Many closes are named after the industry that was located in that area. This particular one, if you look closely, is called 'Fleshmarket Close.' Sorry guys, it used to be the home of the butcher's area. Sheesh, you guys have dirty minds.
This is an excavation in the building of the Tron Kirk. ('Kirk' means 'church' in Scots.) The Tron Kirk is currently just a shell of building that houses the excavation and some exhibits about the history of the city.
