The bars of York aren't what you are thinking they are. In York, as the tour guide is fond of saying, a pub is a bar, a bar is a gate, and a gate is a street. 'Bar' means 'gate' or 'to close off' (as in 'bar the door') and 'gate' is from the Viking 'gata,' which means 'street,' hence leading to streets with names like Micklegate, Stonegate, Coppergate, and Whipmawhopmagate. The City of York has a virtual tour of the walls on its homepage.
Bootham Bar, on the north road.
You'd think it would be easy to track down which bar this is, wouldn't you? Hah! None of the pictures I can find of the bars of York look anything like this one.
Same here. I think I just take pictures of the wrong side of the bar. Sigh. I remember the guide saying that this gatehouse was occupied up until the 1950s or so.
