mariya's
greek and american grill

Address
1804 Welsh Avenue
College Station, TX
(979) 693-2337

Hours:
Mon - Thurs., 11 AM to 9 PM
Fri. - Sun, 11 AM to 10 PM

Website: http://www.mariyas.com/

Directions:
Mariya's is located at the corner of Southwest Parkway and Welsh. An online map is available on their website. Short directions are: drive south down Texas Avenue. Turn west (right) onto Southwest Parkway when you reach the big Kroger Shopping Center. Welsh is several stoplights up, and the restaurant is on the southwest corner in the same shopping center as a convenience store.

Prices:
Reasonable. Appetizers run $3, sandwiches about $4, entrees $8. You'll probably get out of here for between $8 and $15.

Veggie-friendly?
Yes, as long as you're willing to order your meal off the appetizer list (perhaps ordering the appetizer sampler platter for $9.99 and asking them to hold the kibbies). Otherwise, you're pretty much stuck with falafel and tabbouleh.

Notes
Mariya's! Now with Air Conditioning! It wasn't a joke when they first opened -- the air conditioning didn't get installed for a few months after they opened, during a typical Texas-heat summer. It is, however, much cooler now. It's a local family-owned and -operated establishment. I felt I ought to mention that somewhere but couldn't figure out where to shoehorn that in.

The food is tasty. My half-Greek grad assistant reports that she considers the food to be closer to Lebanese than Greek, but she was still enthusiastic. Another grad assistant reported that she would have liked the flavors to be a bit stronger, but noted that they probably toned down the dishes for a generic American audience and suggests asking them to add more spices when ordering. I shall direct your attention to their online menu. Dishes that I and my friends have especially liked are the kibbies for appetizers, shish tavouk, kafta kebab, and of course the baklava. Mariya's offers several generic-American entrees (burgers, chicken, Philly steak-and-cheese sandwiches, and the like) for the unadventurous of palate.

Service is slow . They also cook their food to order, so waits of up to 45 minutes have been known. This is a place for leisurely dining -- or would be, if it weren't for the uncomfortable chairs that are not especially fan-size-friendly -- but you can phone in your order from campus, fool around for a few minutes, and pick it up fresh and ready to go.

Bring a supply of quarters -- they have arcade games available to while away the time waiting for your meal. Also, to add to that Authentic! Greek! Atmosphere! [TM], they have imported a number of small children to stand around and stare at you while you dine.
